Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Quality education is one of the pillars of sustainable development, yet it remains an area of concern in many parts of Nigeria, including Dutse Local Government, Jigawa State. Despite the government's efforts to improve educational infrastructure, challenges such as poor funding, inadequate teaching staff, and outdated curricula persist. Print media, including newspapers and magazines, have played an essential role in advocating for better educational practices and highlighting the need for reforms (Abubakar & Shehu, 2023). Through editorials, news stories, and opinion pieces, print media informs the public about education policies, highlights the achievements and shortcomings of the system, and calls for government action. This study investigates the effectiveness of print media advocacy in promoting quality education in Dutse, exploring how media coverage impacts public perception and influences educational policies and practices.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the efforts of print media to advocate for quality education in Dutse, the challenges of low literacy rates, inadequate school facilities, and the lack of community involvement in educational matters remain widespread. The influence of print media in driving real change in education may be limited by factors such as poor circulation, the accessibility of publications, and the effectiveness of the content in reaching decision-makers and the general public (Musa & Bello, 2024). This study aims to assess the effectiveness of print media advocacy in addressing the challenges facing education in Dutse Local Government and explore ways to enhance the media's impact on the sector.
